Overview
From problem framing to a resolved design.
The project investigated the gap between newborn safety requirements and a mother’s need for close, independent access after C-section. Field observations across five hospitals highlighted situations where infants were placed on the mother’s bed or where mothers depended on a companion to bring the baby closer.
The design direction focused on reducing physical distance between mother and baby while retaining a dedicated newborn surface, adjustable positioning, mobility, storage, and access for both family and clinical staff.
User needs
The project prioritized three needs: removing unnecessary distance between mother and baby, enabling access without relying on a companion, and providing a safer alternative to placing the infant directly on the adult bed.
Concept exploration
Sketches explored bedside, over-bed, pivoting and suspended configurations before converging on a compact mobile base that could approach the adult bed from multiple positions.
Final concept
The final direction combines a height-adjustable column, a tilting newborn surface, opening side panels, integrated storage for baby and care supplies, and a controller positioned for mother access.
